Jon Nixey - Family History

Berkshire to Monmouthshire

via Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire & Somerset

The earliest known details I am aware of in my Nixey family is the marriage of my great great great great great great grandparents, John Nixy and Joan Saunders, at Oxford in 1704. Their marriage record states that John was from North Hinksey in Berkshire, and Joan was from Cuddesdon in Oxfordshire. The earliest record I have found so far of my family in Cuddesdon is on the burial entry of Francis Munt on December 27, 1729, where Joan Nixey was recorded as the affidavit. The earliest record I have found so far of the family being at Cuddesdon Mill, is again in connection with Joan Nixey, on her burial record on March 27, 1741.

My direct line of the family stayed in the Cuddesdon area of Oxfordshire only until the mid 1760's, when my great great great great grandparents, John Nixey and Elizabeth Hessey, began raising their family in the Slough area of Buckinghamshire. My family line stayed there for about a century, until my great great grandparents, Joseph Nixey and Martha Blinco, made the move westwards to Twerton, which is northeast of Bath in Somerset. My grandfather, Arthur Albert Ernest Nixey, who was born at Twerton in 1898, moved to Abertillery in the South Wales valleys in the early 1920's to work in the coalmines. His brother-in-law, Arthur Henry Smith, had also moved to Abertillery, and in 1923, my grandfather was living with Arthur and Lou at Darran Road.

W G Nixey's Black Lead

The well-known manufacturer of refined black lead and knife polish, William George Nixey, was the brother of my great great grandfather, Joseph. William died at Slough in 1870 aged 57, and his son, also William George, took over the company until his death in 1912, also aged 57.
